Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), led by President Kim Dong-cheol, will construct its Gangwon headquarters as the first zero-energy building (ZEB) with Grade 1 (with an energy self-sufficiency rate of over 100%) in both the public and private sectors. The new building, located in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon City, Gangwon Province, will have a total floor area of 16,471 square meters and is slated to start construction in the latter half of this year with a completion target set for 2029.
Initially, the building had obtained a preliminary certification for ZEB Grade 3, but KEPCO has upgraded its target to Grade 1 to proactively fulfill government policies such as the K-RE100 initiative for public institutions.
To achieve an energy self-sufficiency rate of 100% or higher, high-efficiency solar panels will be extensively installed, and cutting-edge energy technologies will be deployed. KEPCO plans to pilot technologies such as Perovskite BIPV integrated into window glazing, ultra-high-efficiency solar tandem cells to overcome the limitations of existing silicon cells, and hydrogen fuel cells, using the new building as a testbed for energy innovation.
To maximize space utility and respond flexibly to future technological advancements and changes in the energy environment, the building will feature a modular structure with variable internal walls.
President Kim Dong-cheol stated, “The promotion of the ZEB Grade 1 for the new Gangwon headquarters is a symbolic exemplary case of a public institution leading government energy policy. We will continue to expand the construction of high-level zero-energy buildings and elevate the standards of energy innovation to foster a robust industrial ecosystem and drive the development of the national energy sector.”
