K-original musical “Maybe Happy Ending” triumphs by winning two awards at the Drama League Awards in the U.S.

The musical “Maybe Happy Ending,” currently being performed on Broadway, has won two awards at the 91st Drama League Awards. According to Broadway World on the 18th (local time), the musical won the Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical awards at the ceremony held on the 16th in New York.

Launched in 1935, the Drama League Awards is the oldest theatrical award in the United States, recognizing exceptional plays and musicals performed on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages.

“Maybe Happy Ending,” originally debuting in Korea in 2016, made its way to Broadway in November of last year, playing at the Belasco Theatre in New York’s Manhattan. Due to the enthusiastic response from local audiences, it is scheduled to run on Broadway until January next year.

The musical had also received the top award in the musical category at the 89th New York Drama Critics Circle Awards on the 7th of the previous month. Additionally, it has been nominated in 10 categories, including Best Musical, Script, Direction, and Music, at the upcoming 78th Tony Awards on June 8th. The Tony Awards are known for being as influential in the theater and musical world as the Oscars are in film.

Set in a near-future Korea, “Maybe Happy Ending” revolves around the story of robots Oliver and Claire, who are designed to assist humans but end up falling in love. The show is a collaboration between writer Park Chun-hyo and composer Will Aronson, known as the “Will-Hue” duo. In Korea, the musical will meet audiences again this October as part of the 10th anniversary performance celebration.
