Jeon Hyo-seong, a singer, reflects on her past obsession with appearance. On December 29, during the SBS broadcast of ‘Bodymentary – A Confession about Flesh,’ prominent Korean female stars share their honest experiences related to appearance. Kim Wan-sun, Soyou, Jeon Hyo-seong, Han Seung-yeon, and Hwa Sa will candidly discuss the hidden sides of the entertainment industry and their personal stories about living under the scrutiny of appearance and weight in different eras and stages.
Hwa Sa reminisces about her trainee days when she had to record and disclose her weight daily, mentioning a story where “a weight chart was posted on the wall and was factored into monthly evaluations.” Despite achieving peak popularity with her solo song ‘Maria,’ she confesses that it was the most challenging time due to the pressure of the “unrealistic beauty standards” expected of female celebrities.
Soyou shared her trainee experience of weekly weight checks by the new talent development team. Admiring the tall and slim figures of senior artists like Girls’ Generation, she controlled her meal portions by marking a line for each side dish she ate. Recalling tense days where she had to wear heels even while commuting to practice, Soyou revealed the constant pressure to lose weight for debut eventually led to her fainting on the street.
Jeon Hyo-seong confessed to experiencing severe body breakdowns from extreme dieting and binge eating due to weight stress. After her solo album failed to make it into the top 100 during its first week, she considered undergoing breast surgery to regain public attention, revealing the extent of her obsession with appearance. She also shared an incident of injuring herself while wearing 15cm high heels with her small frame and securing them with bra nude straps to prevent them from slipping during dance performances.
‘Bodymentary’ airs at 11 PM on the 29th.
