According to foreign news reports, the Israeli military carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah’s weapons storage facilities in eastern Lebanon. Local security sources reported that Hezbollah’s weapons depot in the Bekaa Valley region in eastern Lebanon was bombed by the Israeli military. The airstrike targeted an area in eastern Lebanon, about 70km north of the Israeli border.
Israel has been conducting military operations in border areas to deter Hezbollah since the surprise attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas last October, but targeting deep inside eastern Lebanon is considered unusual. Reuters reported that while Israel has targeted Hezbollah fighters and rocket launch sites over the past 10 months, hitting a weapons depot is rare.
Hezbollah had vowed retaliation after one of its senior commanders, Fuad Shukr, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on July 30th. In response, the Israeli military announced that its air force had eliminated Hussein Ali Hussein, who commanded Hezbollah’s rocket and missile units in the Dair Alzour region near the southern border of Lebanon. Israel also targeted a military facility believed to be used by Hezbollah in the Tyre area of southern Lebanon.
