“(Washington=Yonhap News) By Cho Jun-hyung = The number of donors who have contributed to Vice President Kamala Harris, regarded as the ‘alternative candidate,’ in the ten days since President Joe Biden resigned as a presidential candidate is estimated to be more than the number of Biden’s supporters over the previous 15 months.
According to Politico, a political specialty media outlet on the 22nd local time, the Harris camp and the joint fundraising committee affiliated with the camp reported that nearly 2.3 million people supported Vice President Harris from the day President Biden declared his withdrawal from re-election on the 21st last month to the 31st.
Before officially becoming a presidential candidate, Vice President Harris had already received support from 2.3 million donors. Vice President Harris was nominated as a presidential candidate through a virtual roll call of Democratic delegates from January 1-5 and was nominated at this convention.
In contrast, President Biden received electoral funding from slightly fewer donors, totaling 2.1 million, from his declaration of re-election challenge in April of last year until his withdrawal declaration last month.
In particular, it was noted that more than 1.5 million donors who sent funds to Vice President Harris’ side during the last 10 days had no history of donating to the ‘Biden camp.’
Most of the donors who supported Harris over the past ten days did not send funds to any other Democratic candidate challenging the November 5 elections for congressional and gubernatorial offices during this election cycle.
Politico analyzed that these figures demonstrate the enthusiasm of Democratic Party members for Vice President Harris while also showing that Vice President Harris is making inroads even with those who did not support President Biden.
About 25% of Harris’ recent donors had previously supported President Biden in the 2020 presidential election but did not contribute to him in this current election cycle.
The Harris camp reported having raised $240 million in electoral funding to the Federal Election Commission for the month of July.
This amount was about four times the size of the campaign funds reported to have been raised by former President Donald Trump during the same period.
