On the afternoon of the 16th, Kim Dong-yeon, the Governor of Gyeonggi Province, announced that they will launch a ‘climate satellite’ for the first time in Gyeonggi Province. Governor Kim made this announcement at the joint ‘Global RE100 Pressure and Korea’s Response’ forum held at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building on that day.
According to Governor Kim, the launch of the climate satellite in Gyeonggi Province will provide various climate data and aerial information necessary for disaster response, agriculture and livestock industries, urban expansion and development, starting from next year. This will enhance the climate crisis response strategy and potentially create new industries based on satellite images.
Furthermore, Gyeonggi Province plans to introduce climate insurance by the end of the year. Climate insurance is a social security system that provides support for low-income groups and the elderly who suffer from diseases or injuries caused by climate disasters such as extreme heatwaves or cold waves.
Governor Kim emphasized that in addition to climate crisis response, the government should also address income polarization, economic inequality, and establish democracy as ‘active public goods’ that it must provide. He expressed his commitment to expand the efforts of Gyeonggi Province nationwide and strive to make it a model for the central government.
