Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education Adjusts Academic Schedule with 107 Schools Closing Due to Wildfire in Northern Gyeongbuk – 348 Students Evacuated

Due to the spread of a large wildfire in the northern part of North Gyeongsang Province, including Uiseong and Andong, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education has adjusted the academic schedule for kindergartens and elementary, middle, and high schools.

As of March 26, 107 schools, including kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and special schools, have been adjusted to either suspend classes or conduct remote learning.

In Andong, 2 kindergartens are closed, and in Uiseong, 5 kindergartens are closed while 1 is conducting remote learning. For elementary schools, 26 in Andong, 7 in Uiseong, 8 in Cheongsong, and 6 in Yeongyang are closed, with 1 in Uiseong conducting remote learning. Middle schools in Andong (9), Uiseong (5), Cheongsong (9), and Yeongyang (1) are also conducting remote learning. High schools in Andong (10), Uiseong (2), and Cheongsong (4) are closed, with 1 in Andong conducting remote learning. In Andong, 2 special schools are closed on the 26th.

Currently, 348 students have evacuated due to the wildfire, including 96 from Uiseong, 251 from Cheongsong, and 1 from Bonghwa. The status of evacuations in Andong and Yeongyang is being assessed as of 9 AM, according to the Gyeongbuk Office of Education.

The Education Office has opened 17 schools and educational facilities to accommodate 769 residents and 6 students. The facilities include Anpyeong Elementary School, Student Gymnasium, Unitech High School, Uiseong High School, Uiseong Elementary School, Okjeon Elementary School, Jeomgok Elementary School, Gyeongbuk Jungbu Middle School, and the Creative Personality Education Center in Uiseong; Jinbo Elementary School, Jinbo High School, Pacheon Elementary School, Cheongsong Elementary School, Gyeongbuk Golf Business High School, Dopyeong Elementary School, and Hyeonseon High School in Cheongsong; and Mulya Elementary School in Bonghwa.

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education plans to swiftly report and continuously investigate the damage status after checking the field situation and provide health and psychological support to students.
