Gwangju Mayor Requests Cooperation from Ruling and Opposition Party Floor Leaders to Incorporate ‘5.18 Spirit’ into the Constitution

Kang Ki-jung, the mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, met with the floor leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties to request their efforts in including the “Constitutional Preamble of the May 18th Spirit” in the constitution. Kang Ki-jung met with Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, and Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People’s Power Party at the National Assembly today (14th) to deliver a letter titled ‘Gwangju in May’ urging the inclusion of the preamble of the May 18th spirit in celebration of the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

Mayor Kang first met with Floor Leader Park Chan-dae, attaching a badge commemorating the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. He introduced the contents of the letter by stating, “This year, Gwangju has designated it as the first year to include the constitutional preamble of the May 18th spirit. This is also a task for the 22nd National Assembly. One possible path for the current National Assembly is to enshrine the May 18th spirit into the constitution.”

Mayor Kang also mentioned that the “May 18th Democratic Uprising Truth Investigation Committee” will finalize a comprehensive report by the end of next month and expressed the importance of the report being well-written and reported to the National Assembly for follow-up actions.

In response, Floor Leader Park vowed to finalize the inclusion of the constitutional preamble of the May 18th spirit in the 22nd National Assembly, stating, “There will be no disagreement between the ruling and opposition parties on this matter. It was a promise made by the ruling party, and once the 22nd National Assembly convenes, it will lead the discussion on constitutional amendments.”

Mayor Kang also met with Floor Leader Choo and delivered the same message. Floor Leader Choo praised Mayor Kang as someone with experience and passion for the development of South Korea and regions, expressing his willingness to actively listen and cooperate in fulfilling the duty for regional development.

After the meeting with Floor Leader Choo, Mayor Kang met with reporters and shared, “I talked a bit about what I usually think about constitutional amendments, including the inclusion of the May 18th preamble in the constitution.” He added that Floor Leader Choo had only listened to what he had to say.
