[OSEN=Reporter Yoo Soo-yeon] YouTube channel ‘Pissik University’ is facing backlash for making regional discrimination remarks.
Recently, the YouTube channel ‘Pissik University’ released a video titled ‘I Came to Yeongyang, the Smallest City in Gyeongsang-do’. The content, called ‘Made in Gyeongsang-do’, features Pissik University members comedians Jung Jaehyung, Kim Minsu, and Lee Yong-joo traveling around different locations in Gyeongsang-do and introducing them.
While exploring Yeongyang in Gyeongsang-do, Kim Minsu remarked, “I’ve been to almost every place in Gyeongsang-do. I actually first heard about Yeongyang over the phone.” He also questioned, “Are there really 15,00 people here? I haven’t even seen twenty people since I arrived. Where are these 15,000 people?”
In response, Lee Yong-joo explained, “This is a longevity village. It has the largest population of people over 100 years old.” Kim Minsu, surprised, commented, “If there are people over 100, this is not a silver town but a gold town,” and jokingly said, “There’s no Lotteria here”, “There’s no India. There are no crosswalks, traffic lights, or anything in sight,” as they explored the town.
Later, they visited a pastry shop recommended by a friend and enjoyed eating a hamburger bun. Some members commented, “The taste is interesting”, “You can feel a story in the food”, “It tastes like what grandma would make,” while others said, “Young people who want to eat hamburgers have to settle for this,” “To me, it feels like army stew. Since we can’t eat it, are we just eating this?”
During their visit to a traditional Korean restaurant, they remarked, “Honestly, it’s not very distinctive,” “If we ate this every day, imagine how delicious the hamburger would be. That earlier hamburger must be heaven’s honey flavor,” and joked, “If I were a civil servant, if I were stationed here… this is as far as I’d go,” “It’s just not fun on a human level.” “I came to Yeongyang to try different things, but there’s nothing to do here,” “Blueberry jelly has grandma’s taste. It’s really shocking,” “From above, the river looked beautiful, but when I came down, it smelled like river water.”
Netizens who watched the video criticized it. Comments included, “If I were the pastry shop owner, it would have pained me,” “It seems too rude in front of the restaurant owner,” “As someone from Yeongyang, I feel heartbroken and can’t share the video with my friends,” “Regional discrimination remarks are pouring in,” and other negative reactions. As criticism intensifies, the public is paying attention to what stance Pissik University will take.
