Philip Goldberg, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, is scheduled to be replaced in line with the change in the U.S. administration. It has been reported that Ambassador Goldberg will retire in January next year, concluding his 35-year diplomatic career and leaving Seoul. After Ambassador Goldberg’s departure, a new ambassador will be nominated, and during the period while the appointment process is underway, the Deputy Chief of Mission will temporarily take over ambassadorial duties. Ambassador Goldberg’s predecessor, Harry Harris, left his post in line with President Biden’s inauguration, and it took a year and a half for Goldberg to assume his duties thereafter, making the duration of the vacancy unclear.
