On the 27th, an employee at a bank in Gijang County, Busan, received a commendation from the police for preventing a voice phishing incident, thereby protecting the citizen’s wealth. According to the Gijang Police Station, a commendation was awarded to the employee at the Shinhan Bank Jeonggwan Financial Center at approximately 10:30 AM for blocking the withdrawal of 13 million won, which was intended as a voice phishing fraud.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of the 12th when a customer requested to exchange 13 million won into dollars. The bank employee inquired about the purpose of the funds. Although the customer claimed it was for travel expenses overseas, they could not provide a plane ticket, raising the employee’s suspicion of a possible voice phishing scam. After receiving a notification from Shinhan’s Consumer Protection Department that the customer’s account was flagged as ‘abnormal transaction account’, the employee promptly reported it to the police, effectively preventing the scam from proceeding.
Kwon Yoo-hyeon, the Chief of Gijang Police Station, expressed gratitude, stating, “The proactive report by the employee helped prevent irrecoverable financial loss.” He further mentioned that collaboration with financial institutions will continue to be strengthened to prevent voice phishing and protect the daily lives of residents.
