The companies that advertised ‘radon blocking and radon reduction’ without basis while selling paint products have been sanctioned by the Fair Trade Commission. On the 19th, the FTC announced that it has imposed corrective orders on six paint businesses including Noru Paint, Samhwa Paint Industry, Chamgil, Hyunil, Pure Home, and Callico for unfair labeling and advertising practices.
According to the FTC, these companies promoted their products such as Soon & Soo Radon Guard (Noru Paint), Inplus Radon Guard (Samhwa Paint Industry), Activebar 707 (Chamgil), Nanoclean (Hyunil), Radon Safe (Pure Home), and CoatingEn (Callico) claiming without objective evidence that their products have radon reduction effects.
Some companies presented inappropriate self-test reports or used false statements such as ‘results of tests commissioned by accredited institutions’ to promote their products. However, according to test results from the National Institute of Environmental Research, these products were found to have no radon reduction effects or significantly lower effects than advertised.
The FTC determined that the false and exaggerated advertisements by these companies hindered consumers’ rational purchasing choices and disrupted fair trade practices. The FTC stated that it will continue to monitor unfair labeling and advertising practices in areas related to public health and safety, and will strictly respond to any violations.
