At a site near the Red Fort in New Delhi, India, a car exploded on the 10th (local time), resulting in the death of 8 people and injuries to 11 others.
Local fire authorities reported that at least 6 cars and 3 auto rickshaws (three-wheeled vehicles converted from motorcycles) were set on fire.
They also stated, “The highest level of alert has been issued in this area,” and explained that “20 fire engines have been deployed to the scene, and surrounding vehicles have also been damaged, leading to police control of the area.”
Sanjay Tyagi, a spokesperson for the Delhi Police, mentioned, “The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed.”
Videos captured of the accident site showed pedestrians collapsed around vehicles engulfed in flames on a crowded street near a metro station.
A witness who was near the scene at the time told Indian broadcaster NDTV, “There was a loud noise and the windows shook.”
