A 50-year-old woman was apprehended by the police in Incheon for killing 11 pigeons by scattering uncooked rice mixed with insecticide. The Bupyeong Police Station announced on the 26th that they had booked the woman, identified as Ms. A, without detention for violating the Wildlife Protection and Management Act.
Ms. A is accused of causing the deaths of 11 pigeons around 7:10 a.m. on the 6th near Baegun Station on the Gyeongin Line in Bupyeong-gu. Employed by a cleaning service company, she was reportedly conducting environmental cleanup operations near the station when she mixed insecticide with rice and scattered it on the ground.
It was reported that after the mass pigeon death was covered by the media, Ms. A turned herself in to the police. At that time, a report of “dead pigeons” had already been filed with the 112 emergency call center, and the authorities in Bupyeong had collected 11 pigeons’ carcasses for detailed examination by the National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control.
Local authorities had already received complaints that there were “too many pigeons” in the area. During questioning, Ms. A stated that the pigeons hindered her cleaning work, which led her to poison them.
The police are currently working with the National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control to identify the specific type and composition of the insecticide used in the crime. Based on the results of this analysis, Ms. A is set to be forwarded to the prosecution.
