Director Byun Young-joo has made a pointed critique of the entire K-culture system amidst the controversy involving HYBE and NewJeans. She emphasized that the current conflict should not be reduced to an issue concerning specific individuals or companies but rather should prompt a reevaluation of the industrial structure that repeatedly creates such situations.
Recently, Director Byun appeared on the YouTube show “Jung Jun-hee’s Saturday Debate,” discussing whether K-culture is truly thriving. During the conversation, dark prospects for the film and video industry were addressed, along with structural issues facing the K-POP industry.
Byun noted, “Another significant pillar of K-culture, K-POP, has been described with the phrase ‘unable to meet NewJeans’ for years now,” adding that there is a need to reflect on what kind of system allows such occurrences to happen periodically.
