“Coordinate tagging ‘comment bombing’… Kakao Map to initiate blocking”

“Kakao plans to strengthen its response to so-called ‘coordinate-attacking comment terrorism’ on some food and beverage outlets. According to Rep. Kim Jang-gyeom’s office from the People Power Party, Kakao is currently working on measures to address comment damage, with a focus on strengthening location verification for photos taken on-site.

Kakao intends to change its current policy of exposing existing comments after resolving a report of harmful comments, by giving store owners the option to decide whether to publish the previous reviews or not.

Additionally, to prevent malicious comments from non-visitors and other non-users, Kakao plans to enhance location verification for attached photos in reviews, making it easier for users to identify.

For reviews from users who make reservations through Kakao Link, the company is considering awarding points to have them prominently displayed.

Kakao explained that prioritizing verified comments is part of its effort to provide users with reliable information.

To prevent malicious comments in the past, Kakao has enforced policies like ‘Place Safe Mode’, which temporarily stops showing reviews if non-location-related reviews are repeatedly registered, and ‘No Review Setting,’ allowing store owners to hide reviews.

The company also displays the number of reviews and the average rating of a user who left a review to prevent malicious rating attacks. Each Kakao account is limited to one review per location.

Rep. Kim Jang-gyeom’s office emphasized the urgent need for an enhanced plan to prevent malicious comment attacks from causing harm to small business owners, including potential politically motivated attacks.”
