
KBS is facing controversy for broadcasting an opera called ‘Madame Butterfly’ set in Japan on Liberation Day. On the midnight broadcast of August 15th, ‘KBS Relay Seat’ aired the opera ‘Madame Butterfly.’ First performed in 1904, ‘Madame Butterfly’ is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini, depicting the period when the United States forcibly opened Japan to the West. The characters in ‘Madame Butterfly’ wear kimonos, and a scene of a wedding ceremony with a Gagaku melody was shown. Broadcasting such a work on Liberation Day has sparked controversy.
