Gwangju Buk-gu has conditionally approved the construction of ‘The Hyundai Gwangju,’ the region’s first complex shopping mall, on the condition of traffic improvement.

Gwangju Buk-gu announced today (18th) that it has conditionally approved the construction permit for The Hyundai Gwangju, which will be built on the former Jeonnam and Ilshin Textile site.

The Hyundai Gwangju is a large complex shopping mall with shopping, cultural, and leisure facilities, located on a site of 32,364㎡ (59.19m high, 214m long, 111m wide) with a total floor area of 273,895㎡ (6 underground floors, 8 above-ground floors), 1.5 times the size of The Hyundai Seoul.

To minimize the inconvenience to citizens that may arise from The Hyundai Gwangju’s opening, Buk-gu established a task force last March and reviewed the appropriateness of the building and infrastructure installations through three assessments.

Additionally, with the analysis that daily traffic could increase to a maximum of 290,000 vehicles due to the complex shopping mall and nearby large-scale redevelopment projects, Buk-gu approved the construction permit with the condition that The Hyundai Gwangju corporation devise traffic improvement measures.

As part of the building permit conditions, Buk-gu allows Gwangju Kia Champions Field visitors to use The Hyundai Gwangju complex shopping mall’s parking lot and ensures post-traffic monitoring after the completion of the development.

To alleviate traffic congestion caused by construction, the conditions include expanding temporary parking lots during the construction period, devising traffic improvement measures, and establishing business plans in conjunction with the Gwangju Stream waterfront project and improvements to bicycle lanes and walkways.

The Hyundai Gwangju corporation proposed the district plan to Gwangju City in February last year, underwent traffic impact assessment, preliminary review of fire performance-based design, and landscape and architecture deliberations, and is dismantling the old Jeonnam and Ilshin Textile buildings.

So far, the demolition of the site where the complex shopping mall will be located is complete, while the dismantling is underway for the remaining areas designated for public facilities and housing.

The Hyundai Gwangju corporation is expected to commence construction soon, aiming for an opening in 2027.
