Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People Power Party, urged Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, to stop outdoor rallies aimed at protecting certain interests, unilateral passing of bills without bipartisan agreement, retaliatory budget cuts against state organizations, and rampant impeachment efforts against public officials if he truly desires politics of coexistence.
Choo made these remarks during a party strategy meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, after Lee expressed a wish for “politics of coexistence and moving forward together” following a not guilty verdict in his first trial for perjury charges the previous day.
He highlighted the Democratic Party’s plan to impeach prosecutors, including Lee Chang-su, the head of the Central District Prosecutors’ Office, during a plenary session on the 29th, emphasizing that withdrawing these impeachment motions would be the first step toward transitioning from politics of retaliation to politics of coexistence.
Continuing, he suggested refocusing all regular National Assembly operations on the public’s livelihood and asked that Lee’s personal legal issues be left to the judiciary while returning public spaces back to citizens over weekends.
Choo also called for the swift passage of various laws, including the repeal of the financial investment income tax, postponement of cryptocurrency taxation, expansion of the national power grid, semiconductor special laws, redevelopment and reconstruction special laws, deepfake prevention laws, disaster recovery aid for North Korean waste balloon incidents, and the establishment of a strategic population planning department.
Additionally, he requested active cooperation to finalize the public welfare budget, which he described as “winter-proofing for the people’s livelihood,” by the constitutionally mandated deadline of December 2nd, to ensure warmth reaches the public at the right time, while advising to set aside the “bullet-proof long padding” (outdoor rallies).
