**Global Big Tech CEOs Gather… Chey Tae-won: “AI Innovation Impossible Alone”**
**’SK AI Summit’ Held… Video Talks with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang**
**Emphasis on Collaboration with MS, TSMC, etc. by SK**
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kang Tae-woo = SK Group and global artificial intelligence (AI) leaders gathered together to strengthen AI collaboration.
Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, stated at the ‘SK AI Summit 2024’ held in COEX, Seoul, on the morning of the 4th, “Many people’s cooperation is necessary for the future of AI,” and mentioned that “SK is engaging in many partnership discussions with NVIDIA, Microsoft (MS), TSMC, and OpenAI.”
The SK AI Summit, an event traditionally held annually by SK Group, was expanded into a large-scale global event this year under the slogan ‘AI Together, AI Tomorrow.’
Chairman Chey noted the vast unknowns of AI and emphasized that collaboration across diverse fields is essential to positively steer changes brought by AI.
He also spoke about the current state of collaboration between SK and global big tech companies.
Chairman Chey mentioned, “MS is an important customer of SK Hynix’s high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and is our partner in discussing AI data centers and energy solutions,” adding, “To achieve carbon neutrality and data center expansion goals, SK and MS have jointly invested in nuclear energy companies.”
He continued, “NVIDIA consistently requests more HBMs from SK Hynix whenever a new graphics processing unit (GPU) is released, often asking for earlier delivery schedules. During my recent meeting with CEO Jensen Huang, he requested that we advance the supply of HBM4 (6th generation) by six months, to which we agreed.”
SK Hynix began delivering its 5th generation HBM, HBM3E, the industry’s first 8-stack, to NVIDIA in March this year and started mass production of the 12-stack HBM3E last month, with plans for a 4th quarter release.
The custom HBM4 12-stack product is slated for release next year.
He also emphasized the partnership with TSMC, the leading company in the foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) sector.
Chairman Chey stated, “No matter how well-designed a chip is, it is meaningless if it can’t be manufactured. SK is collaborating closely with NVIDIA and TSMC to address the global AI chip supply shortage.”
He added, “TSMC is an ideal partner,” and noted that “SK Hynix is leading AI innovation through a tri-partite collaboration with NVIDIA and TSMC.”
During the event, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and UC Berkeley professor David Patterson emphasized the future of AI and their collaboration with SK Hynix through a video discussion.
Messages about partnerships were also shared through video by Satya Nadella, CEO of MS, and Wei Zhejia, CEO of TSMC.
