Cheorwon 126mm of rain… Damage from ‘submersion and bending’ in Gangwon

On the 23rd, heavy rain of 126mm fell in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, resulting in flooding of vehicles and falling trees around the region. At 11:17 p.m. on the 22nd, a sedan was submerged in suddenly rising rainwater on a road in Galmal-eup, Cheorwon-gun. Fire authorities who received the report rescued the driver safely and towed the vehicle within 30 minutes. Throughout the night, Cheorwon experienced flooded roads and landslides caused by the rain. Additionally, in Chuncheon, Hongcheon, and Wonju, strong winds accompanied by falling trees caused further damage.

According to the Gangwon Province Fire Headquarters, there were a total of 50 reported damages, including 31 cases of fallen trees, 6 cases of drainage work, and 3 cases of building flooding. Restrictions were placed on access to Mt. Chiaksan in Wonju and the Hwacheon walking trail. In Pyeongchang, a heavy rain advisory was issued, with over 40mm of rainfall per hour, while Hwaseong received over 20mm of rainfall per hour. The Osan Bridge in Hoengseong is under a flood warning with enhanced on-site surveillance.

Gangwon Province is operating at Emergency Response Level 1 and taking necessary precautions. Rainfall data until 7 a.m. included 126.8mm in Cheorwon, 114mm in Myeonon, Pyeongchang, 105mm in Cheongil, Hwaseong, 82.3mm in Gwangdeoksan, Hwacheon, 44mm in Sidong, Hongcheon, 36.5mm in Mt. Chiaksan, Wonju, 34.5mm in Haeahn, Yanggu, 33mm in Seohwa, Inje, and others. All heavy rainfall warnings in the province have been lifted.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted additional rainfall between 10-60mm inland and in mountainous areas, and 5-10mm along the east coast until the morning. The daytime temperatures are expected to range from 27-29 degrees Celsius inland, 25-28 degrees Celsius in the mountains, and 30-32 degrees Celsius along the east coast.
