Busan City Councilor Park Jong-cheol Apologizes “Sincerely” Following Controversy Over Post Supporting Martial Law

Park Jong-cheol, a member of the Busan City Council from the People Power Party, has apologized for causing controversy with a post supporting martial law. On December 5, he issued a statement saying, “I sincerely apologize for causing concern and disappointment to many people with my post related to martial law.”

He explained that his intention was to express regret over the extreme political confrontation that lacked dialogue, compromise, cooperation, and debate. He added, “The post expressing my lament as a responsible party member was meant to convey concern over the situation and was not intended to support illegal and unconstitutional martial law.”

Park further stated, “I wanted to emphasize the relief I felt that martial law was lifted and normalcy was restored, but my expression was not adequately conveyed, resulting in misunderstandings and concern. I sincerely apologize for that.” He also committed to being more cautious and responsible in communication and prioritizing public welfare and safety in his legislative activities.

On December 3, following the declaration of martial law, Park posted on social media, expressing his support for the president’s decision and condemning pro-North Korean spies. He stated, “I fully support and empathize with the president’s declaration of martial law. We must prevent administrative paralysis to defend the Republic of Korea and commend President Yoon Seok-yeol’s decision.”

In response, civic groups in Busan have called for Park’s resignation, arguing that as a city council member who should represent the public’s will, his comments disregarding democracy and human rights are unacceptable.
