[Breaking News] Official announcement of the end of this year’s monsoon season on the 27th after extreme heavy rain this summer.

The extreme summer monsoon, which poured heavy rain, was analyzed to have ended on the 27th of last month.

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced this morning at 11 a.m. through a briefing related to the monsoon that the summer monsoon officially ended on the 27th.

The summer monsoon this year started on June 19 in Jeju, similar to previous years, expanded to the southern region on the 22nd, and the central region saw a slightly delayed start of the monsoon on the 29th, which is four days later than usual.

Afterwards, Jeju experienced 39 days of monsoon, the southern region 36 days, and the central region had 29 days, making the total duration of the monsoon longer in the south than usual, and slightly shorter in the central region compared to previous years.

However, the intensity of rainfall was unprecedented, with as many as 8 instances of hourly downpours of 100mm recorded during the summer monsoon period, and the total nationwide precipitation during the monsoon season was 472mm, 1.3 times higher than the average.

Particularly, the central region received a total of 506.3mm, and Jeju recorded 561.9mm, both higher than the average for the year.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that intense heat would prevail after the monsoon season.
