Brazil Southern Flooding, Death and Disappearance of Nearly 200 People… 150,000 Refugees

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, heavy rain has caused half of the city to be flooded, and the death toll from the flood has risen to 83 as of the local time on the 6th.

According to CNN Brazil, the concentrated heavy rain that began on the 29th has affected 345 out of 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, accounting for 70% of the total, and has affected 850,000 residents, which is 7.5% of the state’s population.

The Rio Grande do Sul state government announced that as of this morning, the death toll is 83, with 111 missing and 291 injured.

The number of flood evacuees is approximately 149,000, with 20,000 in shelters and 129,000 staying with family or friends.

The Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, has been indefinitely closed, and the water level of the Guaiba River in Porto Alegre has exceeded the flood limit of 3m, reaching 5.26m.

The National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) issued a red alert for heavy rain in the southeastern region of Rio Grande do Sul until noon on the 7th. The weather agency forecasted heavy rain of over 100mm, winds exceeding 100km/h, and possible hail within the next 24 hours.

Inmet has warned of dangers such as building and farm destruction, power outages, uprooting of trees, floods, and road closures.
