Chungcheongnam-do Province Selected for Urban Flood Response Projects in Three Cities and Counties by Ministry of Environment’s Competition – Project to Be Fully Launched by 2030
Chungcheongnam-do Province announced that three regions—Boryeong City, Nonsan City, and Seocheon County—have been newly designated as “Priority Management Areas for Sewer System Maintenance” by the Ministry of Environment, securing a total of 135.4 billion KRW (with 81.2 billion KRW funded by the national government). This development is expected to initiate comprehensive projects aimed at preventing urban flooding in areas frequently affected by such issues through the maintenance of sewer pipelines and the expansion of rainwater pumping stations.
On November 3rd, Chungcheongnam-do revealed that Boryeong City’s Daecheon-dong, Nonsan City’s Chuiam-dong, and Seocheon County’s Janghang-eup were included in the new designations announced by the Ministry of Environment on October 30th.
The “Priority Management Areas for Sewer System Maintenance” designation targets regions prone to frequent flooding. Upon designation, local governments are granted national funds covering 60% of the necessary sewer system maintenance plans.
A total investment of 135.4 billion KRW will be directed towards this initiative, comprising 81.2 billion KRW from the national government and 54.2 billion KRW from local government funds.
The province plans to methodically implement urban flood response projects, including sewer pipeline maintenance, installation of rainwater pumping stations, and rainwater intake maintenance to enhance drainage infrastructure by 2030.
Since 2013, 20 districts within 12 cities and counties have been designated as priority management areas, with ongoing projects in 11 districts across 7 cities and counties, including Cheonan, Gongju, Asan, Seosan, Dangjin, Buyeo, and Hongseong. Notably, efforts will be made to complete the Asan Baebang urban flood response project early next year.
Kim Young-myeong, head of the provincial environment and forest bureau, stated, “Boryeong, Nonsan, and Seocheon have recently suffered from habitual flood damage due to torrential rains. Through this new designation, we aim to protect the lives and property of residents and create a safe living environment.”
