“Bong Joon-ho, who previously said that the emergency martial law plan tarnished the nation’s dignity, directly criticizes Yoon again, calling it ‘absurd and shocking’ (from ‘Newsroom’)”

In a recent appearance on JTBC’s “Newsroom,” director Bong Joon-ho addressed the December 3rd martial law incident, criticizing President Yoon. Bong, who returned with his new film “Mickey17” five years after “Parasite,” said he feels both scared and excited as the release approaches. He described recent events in South Korea as more surreal than any science fiction film, recalling his childhood memories of martial law as depicted in the film “Spring in Seoul.” Bong never imagined facing martial law again 40 years later.

He recounted receiving inquiries from international colleagues asking about the situation, finding the sudden transition in discussions—from pop culture topics like BTS and apartment rankings to martial law—baffling. Bong expressed a desire to depict historical figures in his future works.

He also joined directors like Kim Sung-soo from “Spring in Seoul” and 6,388 filmmakers in calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol and cessation of alleged insurrection support by the ruling party. Bong remarked on the embarrassment caused by the sudden association of Korea with martial law, contrasting it with its global image tied to cultural exports like BTS and “Squid Game.” He remains optimistic, trusting that legal and systematic processes will eventually restore order and reputation.
