A former idol group rapper, identified as Mr. A, has appealed for leniency in his trial after being charged with secretly filming a sexual encounter with his ex-girlfriend, who was blindfolded. On October 24, the first appellate trial took place at the Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 1. Mr. A’s defense attorney stated, “The defendant’s actions were severely wrong, and he has no excuses for the punishment. However, from the defense’s perspective, the photos were never leaked externally, and this is his first offense. Furthermore, he was expelled from his university during his senior year due to this case. In the first trial, we also placed 20 to 30 million won in escrow to try to settle with the victims, but it was refused, leading to this situation. His parents are here today, trying their best for their son.” The defense continued, “The defendant has done wrong, but considering all circumstances, the original sentence seems heavy. This incident is devastating enough to severely affect his life, and the shock to his parents is indescribable. Even if a settlement is not reached, we hope for leniency.” Mr. A was previously sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison on August 30 for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (filming/distributing using a camera, etc.) and was detained due to flight risk. He was also ordered to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and banned from working in child or disabled-related institutions for 3 years. The prosecution had requested a 3-year sentence in June. Mr. A’s defense appealed the initial ruling, emphasizing that the misconduct happened while he was in a relationship and there was no intention of external distribution. The prosecution also filed an appeal. Mr. A faced trial for secretly filming scenes of sexual acts and major body parts 18 times using a silent camera app on his ex-girlfriend, Ms. B, from July 2022 to May of the previous year. The investigation identified three victims, including Ms. B. Mr. A debuted as part of an idol group in 2017 but stopped activities in 2019 due to health reasons. The group is currently inactive.
