Regarding the tragic fire at the Banyan Tree Hotel construction site in Busan that resulted in six fatalities, the bereaved families expressed frustration during a joint briefing organized by the city of Busan and related agencies. The families felt that the meeting lacked substantial information, as the main response to most questions was that the matter was “under investigation.” Furthermore, officials present couldn’t provide updates on the approval status since the permit officers were absent.
The families submitted their demands and questions before the briefing, which involved various local agencies including the Busan Police and Fire Departments. Despite several explanations on investigation status and support services such as funeral assistance, the families were dissatisfied. They also noted that the criteria for establishing a joint memorial altar, which requires at least ten fatalities, were not met.
In response to these issues, the families plan to hold a press conference on February 22nd at the site of the accident to present their demands.
The fire occurred on February 14th, leading to six deaths and 27 minor injuries. A disaster safety response team was established by the city, promising further updates on victim support measures. Some family members have postponed funeral arrangements, pending an official apology from Samjung, the construction firm.
