Army Chief of Staff Park An-soo has given up on the detention warrant review.

The article discusses the case of Army Chief of Staff Park An-soo, who was involved in the “12/3 Martial Law Crisis.” On the 17th, Park chose to forgo his pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) after a warrant for his arrest was requested due to his involvement in the crisis. Park, who was appointed as the martial law commander following the declaration of martial law on December 3rd, issued Proclamation No. 1, which contained unconstitutional elements like prohibiting all political activities.

The prosecution, during their investigation, questioned Park about the circumstances surrounding the issuance of the proclamation and what was discussed in the decision-support room at the Joint Chiefs of Staff command center with President Yoon Suk-yeol and others. The Special Investigation Headquarters for Martial Law, led by Park Se-hyun, chief of the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office, summoned Park on the 14th as a suspect for questioning on charges including engagement in key tasks related to revolt and abuse of power, then requested an arrest warrant the following day.

Since Park has chosen not to attend the warrant review, the decision on the arrest warrant will be made based on the evidence submitted by the prosecution or a review conducted without his presence. Similarly, previous suspects like former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Counter-Intelligence Chief Yeo In-hyung, who were implicated in conspiracy charges regarding rebellion, also waived their warrant reviews.
