In Los Angeles, correspondent Lim Mina from Yonhap News Agency reported that Apple iPhone sales in China have increased year-on-year for the first time in two years. According to reports from CNBC and other sources, market research firm Counterpoint Research revealed that iPhone sales in China in the second quarter of this year have increased by 8% compared to the same period last year.
This marks the first year-on-year increase in iPhone sales in China since the second quarter of 2023. The increase is attributed to a promotional event in May by Chinese e-commerce companies, during which iPhone 16 models were sold at a discount and some models were offered through an expanded trade-in program.
Counterpoint explained that Apple’s timing in adjusting iPhone prices in May, just a week before the “618 Shopping Festival,” was well-received by consumers. The “618 Shopping Festival,” involving major online shopping malls in China, started on May 13 and continued for over a month.
CNBC noted that the return to growth for Apple in China is welcome news for investors, amidst a 15% drop in Apple stock this year due to various headwinds. However, local companies like Huawei still hold a strong position in the Chinese smartphone market.
Huawei’s smartphone sales in the second quarter increased by 12% year-on-year, maintaining its position as the market leader. Counterpoint’s senior analyst Ivan Lam stated that Huawei continues to boost customer loyalty through the release of new products, replacing older models.
The market also points out that the delayed integration of AI features in iPhones is a competitive disadvantage compared to Chinese products, some of which have already incorporated AI functions.
