“Kwak Jong-geun, the former commander of the Army’s special operations command, has caused a stir with leaked recordings indicating that someone is trying to implicate him for ‘treason.’ The ruling People Power Party reacted strongly, stating that ‘the treason conspiracy show is over.’ Kwak is known for claiming that President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the removal of certain members of the National Assembly.
Kwon Young-se, the emergency response committee chairman of the People Power Party, emphasized in a committee meeting that key evidence used to support the treason charge had been manipulated. He specifically targetted Democratic Party lawmakers, asserting that they need to make a real conscience declaration regarding their involvement.
Na Kyung-won, another member of the People Power Party, also took to Facebook to assert that the treason conspiracy was a deliberate deception aimed at ousting the president through false accusations.
Further discourse arose when recordings were released of Kwak telling a friend on December 5th, 2024, that he was being pressured to make a ‘conscience declaration,’ but felt he was being set up for a treason charge. In the recordings, Kwak suggested that those demanding his declaration were not affiliated with the People Power Party.
The following day, Kwak appeared on the YouTube channel of Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Byung-joo, recounting a directive to remove personnel from within the National Assembly, confirming the involvement of legislators upon being asked.”
