27.1 billion won invested to establish ‘anti-drone’ equipment at 17 major national facilities

20th National Counter-Terrorism Committee… Standardizing Basic Plan Revisions Every 5 Years
Choi, Acting President: “Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Capabilities to Ensure Public Safety”

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hong Guk-gi – This year, the government will invest 27.1 billion won in 17 critical national facilities to establish ‘anti-drone’ (drone neutralization) equipment.

On the 7th, the Government Counter-Terrorism Center held the 20th National Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting at the Seoul Government Complex and reported this plan to Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister of Planning and Finance, Choi Sang-mok.

As of last year, 28 national critical facilities had already adopted the anti-drone system, with a budget of approximately 29.1 billion won.

Since the 16th Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2023, the government began in earnest to establish equipment and systems for critical facilities after developing supplementary measures for anti-drone protection for these facilities.

Additionally, in response to illegal drones, the government is amending related laws, conducting research and development, and performing test evaluations.

At the meeting, the government also reviewed and approved the 2023 national counter-terrorism activity plan, as well as the 2nd National Counter-Terrorism Basic Plan (2025-2030).

With the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit scheduled to be held in Korea at the end of October, the focus of this year’s counter-terrorism plan includes actively supporting the safe hosting of the APEC summit.

Moreover, to reflect rapid changes in domestic and international terrorism scenarios, the government is pursuing a comprehensive restructuring of the basic plan, established following the enactment of the Terrorism Prevention Act in 2016, for the first time in nine years.

To continuously adapt to changes in the terrorism environment, the basic plan revision will be standardized every five years.

Furthermore, at the meeting, the government discussed the establishment of guidelines for counter-terrorism education and training, measures to strengthen prevention and management of violent extremism, and strategies to improve diagnostic evaluations of multi-use terrorism target facilities.

Acting President Choi urged, “Work diligently to strengthen counter-terrorism capabilities and maintain readiness with a sense of mission to create a Korea where the public can live safely and securely.”
