“Chonnam National University, Chungnam National University, and Kongju National University are among the universities that had their 18 innovation proposals selected for the preliminary designation as ‘Glocal Universities,’ which will receive 100 billion won each over five years. About 10 of these are expected to receive final designation. This year marks the last year for the Glocal University project.”
“The Ministry of Education and the Glocal University Committee announced the results of the preliminary designation evaluation on the 27th, following an evaluation by the Evaluation Committee and deliberation by the Glocal University Committee. A total of 81 universities submitted 55 innovation proposals for preliminary designation. Thirty-seven universities applied individually, while five consolidated applications (10 universities) and 13 joint applications (34 universities) were submitted with integration conditions.”
“A total of 18 innovation proposals (from 25 universities) were selected for preliminary designation. Universities like Gyeongnam University, Kyungsung University, Keimyung University, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Soonchunhyang University, Yeonam University, Chonnam National University, Jeju National University, Hannam University, Hanbat National University, and Hanseo University applied individually. Meanwhile, Chosun University + Chosun College of Nursing, Chungnam National University + Kongju National University, and Korea Maritime & Ocean University + Mokpo National Maritime University applied conditional on integration. Collaborative joint applications were also selected, such as Dongshin University – Chodang University – Mokpo Science University, Ulsan College – Yeonam Institute of Engineering, and Jeonju University – Howon University. Among these, four universities, including Gyeongnam University and Dongshin University-Chodang University-Mokpo Science University-Ulsan College-Yeonam Institute of Engineering, and Hannam University had passed last year’s preliminary designation but were not granted final designation, thus maintaining their preliminary status. The Evaluation Committee acknowledged this and decided to maintain their status by recognizing improvements and developments in their existing innovation models.”
“The Glocal University project aims to select 30 non-capital region universities and provide financial support of 100 billion won each over five years. Since starting with the first designation in 2023, 10 innovation proposals have been selected for final designation each year. This year, the final 10 proposals are expected to be selected after the preliminary designations this September. However, it remains undecided whether the full 30 will be selected as initially planned. An official from the Ministry of Education stated, ‘Finalizing 10 this year might lead to a situation where less innovative proposals are chosen just to meet numbers, hence the total number selected will remain open for evaluation.'”
“This preliminary designation also introduced ‘super-regional’ integration types among universities. Examples include the integration plans between Korea Maritime & Ocean University located in Busan and Mokpo National Maritime University in Mokpo, and the integration between Chungnam National University in Daejeon and Kongju National University in Gongju. An official from the Ministry of Education remarked, ‘We can note the emergence of new forms of integration between national universities across broad regions that have not been seen before.'”
“The Ministry of Education will accept objection requests regarding the preliminary designation results until June 10, after which the final results will be confirmed. The final selection of around 10 proposals for the main designation is expected this September following the evaluation.”
