The creator media market size surpasses 5 trillion won… “Employment creation increases by 20%”

The Ministry of Science and ICT has reported that the revenue of the domestic digital creator media industry surpassed 5 trillion won last year. The ministry, along with the Korea Radio Promotion Association, released the “Digital Creator Media Industry Survey” on the 26th.

Key findings from the survey include:

– The number of businesses in the digital creator media sector reached 13,514, with a revenue of 5.3159 trillion won and a workforce of 42,378 people. On average, companies produced 58.1 pieces of content annually.

– The industry demonstrated rapid growth, with a 21.5% increase in the number of businesses and a 28.9% rise in revenue compared to the previous year.

– Specific sectors showed diverse growth rates: video production and support grew by 23.8%, management (MCN) increased by 49.9%, while online video sharing platforms saw a remarkable growth of 101.4%.

– Despite the growth, most businesses remain small-scale, with those having less than 5 employees making up 83.5% of the total, and 65.4% of businesses reporting less than 500 million won in revenue.

– Young individuals under the age of 30 make up 58.7% of those employed in the sector.

– The majority of businesses, 74%, create their own content, averaging 58.1 pieces per year in genres such as lifestyle (36.5%), educational (26.6%), and hobby-related (22.7%).

– YouTube is the most popular platform for content distribution at 68.1%, followed by Instagram at 10.8% and Naver TV at 7.3%.

Choi Joon-ho, Director of Broadcasting Promotion Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, remarked that the digital creator media industry has become a core part of the media landscape, generating new business models and employment opportunities. He emphasized plans to develop various support measures based on this survey to ensure sustainable growth for small creators and businesses.
