Nintendo has announced the launch of its next-generation gaming console, the “Nintendo Switch 2,” scheduled for release on June 5. The company revealed through its website, following an online showcase on the 2nd, that the console’s price will be 49,980 yen (approximately 500,000 won) for the Japan-exclusive version and 69,980 yen (about 700,000 won) for the multilingual version.
In South Korea, the Switch 2 is priced at 648,000 won, while the U.S. release price is set at $449.99 (about 660,000 won). However, in light of tariffs, the price in the U.S. is expected to rise further. Coinciding with the pricing announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump declared reciprocal tariffs, imposing a 24% tariff on Japan.
According to the Financial Times, in response to U.S. tariffs, Nintendo has relocated production facilities for American exports from China to Vietnam and Cambodia. President Trump announced tariffs of 46% on Vietnam and 49% on Cambodia. If the Switch 2 is imported from Cambodia, the U.S. sales price could rise to $670 (approximately 980,000 won), nearly double the price in Japan.
These developments have led to discontent among gamers on the U.S. online community Reddit, where users expressed their frustrations with comments like, “Wait, is this not the tariff price?” and “As of this afternoon, it’s 24% for Japan and 46% for Vietnam. I hope you enjoyed the video game industry. It’s over in America now, along with the entire U.S. consumer electronics industry.”
