(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Cho Seung-han = Oteseok, who was appointed as the new Chief of the Korea Space Agency on the 2nd, is a traditional bureaucrat who has held key positions in the science and technology administration. He is 58 years old and currently the President of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP).
He was born in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, graduated from Jeonju High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Seoul National University. In 1991, he passed the 35th National Civil Service Examination and entered public service, later receiving a master’s degree in Technology Management from the University of Sussex in the UK in 2002.
It is known that he has continuously worked in departments related to science and technology since his time as a lower-ranking official. He has experienced various key fields, including positions such as Secretary to the Minister of Science and Technology, Director of Investment Analysis and Planning at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Director of University Advancement, Director of Basic Science Policy, and Industry-Academia Cooperation Officer.
After the inauguration of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration in 2022, he was appointed as the First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, serving for about a year and a month, and was appointed as the president of KISTEP in April last year.
Within the Ministry of Science and ICT, he accumulated experience in various core projects and successfully led the second and third launches of Nuri during his time as the First Vice Minister.
