Naver to Introduce Notification Feature for Media Companies Starting in May – ‘Naver plans to launch a system that notifies media companies if abusive traffic is detected on articles, allowing them to decide on their comment management policies.’,
At the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee meeting on the 5th, Lee Jung-kyu, Executive General Manager of Naver’s Service Operations Integration Support, who attended as a witness, stated that with recent cases of so-called ‘coordinate marking’ (the act of sharing specific article links to organize comment posting to sway public opinion), “We plan to release a feature in May that will inform media companies when abusive traffic is detected so that each company can comprehensively decide on how to manage comments.”
During the National Assembly session, the seriousness of coordinate marking issues was emphasized. Hwang Jung-ah, a Democratic Party member, pointed out, “Fake news is spreading through comments, and the manipulation of comment sections is being repeated as some extreme communities request support.”
Lee Jung-kyu, Naver’s Executive, added, “There is ongoing dissemination of fake news, previously found false, through comments, contaminating the public opinion space and resulting in deep societal divisions.”
Hwang Jung-ah, the National Assembly member, further stated, “Notification to media companies alone does not prevent public opinion manipulation,” urging Naver to take a more proactive role as a platform.
In response, Executive Lee promised, “This is a critical aspect from a literacy perspective, and we are in discussions about adding such notification functions under the media companies’ representative choice,” adding, “As news consumption patterns have shifted significantly with AI, we will strive to consistently improve in response to the changing environment.”
