Yoo Sang-im, the Minister of Science and ICT, visited the SK Telecom headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 30th to inspect the accident site and the response measures. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that Minister Yoo requested comprehensive measures to minimize public inconvenience and anxiety.
Minister Yoo emphasized the importance of transparently and easily disclosing information about specific damage situations and efforts to prevent further damage because around 25 million people are experiencing significant inconvenience and concern. He also urged reviewing if the current measures meet public expectations and mobilizing all capabilities to resolve the situation. In particular, he stressed the need to significantly expand the personnel and booths supporting USIM replacement at airport roaming centers and to ensure elderly and other digital vulnerable groups can easily sign up for USIM protection services.
Lastly, he ordered active cooperation with the joint public-private investigation team to determine the cause of the accident and to thoroughly reinforce vulnerable areas of the overall communication network to prevent such incidents from reoccurring. Minister Yoo stated, “This accident is a very serious matter directly related to public trust in the communication infrastructure,” and stressed the need for double and triple preventive measures to meet public expectations. He continued, “Given that the government is also responding across multiple departments for a quick resolution, it is crucial to actively discuss and communicate with relevant departments regarding urgent matters.”
