SK Telecom has released a documentary titled “80 Years of Liberation and the Invisible War: AI Independence” on August 13 via its YouTube channel to mark the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. The documentary emphasizes that only countries with core infrastructure like AI technology and AIDC (Artificial Intelligence Data Centers) can secure sovereignty in the AI era. It also features a choral performance of the national anthem by 80 independence activists, restored using SKT’s AI-based Supernova and Soundistill technologies.
The documentary was made with the participation of experts in the fields of history and AI, including Professor Kim Jae-won, President of the Korea Artificial Intelligence Association Kim Hyun-chul, Professor Kim Geon-hee of Seoul National University, and Professor Myung Hyun of KAIST. They explain the significance of liberation, the current status of the Korean AI industry, and the importance of AI infrastructure in an easy-to-understand manner.
Notably, Oh Sang-wook, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in fencing sabre at the Paris Olympics, participated as a narrator for the documentary.
Additionally, the documentary details SKT’s efforts to secure AIDC competitiveness, including plans to build the largest hyperscale AI data center in Northeast Asia in Ulsan, selection as an operator for the national AI-Computing Resource Utilization Enhancement (GPU rental support) project, the selection of an elite team for their independent AI foundation model project, the establishment of the B200 GPU cluster “Hain,” and the launch of GPUaaS (GPU as a Service).
Park Kyu-hyun, head of SKT’s Digital Communication Office, stated, “We hope this documentary will help convey how our sovereignty is expanding from ‘territory’ to ‘AI infrastructure’ in the AI era. SKT will continue to lead in building AI infrastructure to secure AI sovereignty in the future.”
