The Constitutional Court ruled that Acting President Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, infringed on the National Assembly’s powers by not appointing Maeunhyeok as a Constitutional Court judge candidate. In response, President Yoon Suk-yeol’s side criticized the decision as a “political maneuver aimed at securing a quorum for the president’s impeachment decision.”

President Yoon’s legal representatives stated today (the 27th) in a position statement that this decision by the Constitutional Court was a “political expression that violates the spirit of the Constitution.”

President Yoon’s side argued, “It’s easy to surmise that the Constitutional Court intended to appoint candidate Mae and secure six votes for the impeachment decision by accepting the power dispute, after three judges of the court filed for a power dispute without passing a resolution in the National Assembly plenary session, which is illegal.”

They further criticized the decision as “an extremely political calculation and trickery,” emphasizing that the Constitutional Court has chosen “to become a political force for the large opposition party rather than a mediator of conflicts.”

The president’s side also stated, “Even according to the Constitutional Court’s decision, Acting President Choi is not obligated to appoint candidate Mae, and additional review and consideration for administrative execution is necessary.”
