President Yoon Suk-yeol is expected to unveil a new vision for reunification during his Liberation Day speech on the 15th.
Officials from the ruling party have stated that President Yoon plans to reveal a new reunification plan in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the government’s official reunification proposal, the Ethnic Community Unification Plan.
The government and the presidential office are currently preparing the speech, and the specific details are expected to be determined after President Yoon returns from his summer vacation.
Given North Korea’s increasing provocations and Chairman Kim Jong-un’s characterization of inter-Korean relations as “hostile confrontation” at the end of last year and earlier this year, it is analyzed that the government feels the need to present a new vision for reunification.
In addition to the Liberation Day speech, it is anticipated that there will be mentions of relations with Japan, cooperation between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, and other topics.
