Yoon Sang-hyun, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, advised the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) to reject its leader, Lee Jae-myung, in order to survive. On the 17th, Yoon posted on his Facebook page with the title, “Is there no one in the DPK to bell the cat for Leader Lee Jae-myung?”
He mentioned that the DPK recently announced policies under the name “People’s Livelihood Roundtable led by Lee Jae-myung” and previously put up banners nationwide with slogans like “For the people’s livelihood, it’s the DPK; for the economy, it’s Lee Jae-myung.”
Yoon criticized that the party seems to be openly pushing Lee as the presidential candidate without anyone protesting or stopping it, likening it to the one-party systems of North Korea and China. He warned that such actions could lead to severe consequences later on, as in his view, Lee is bound to fail.
Yoon further explained that on the 26th, Lee is likely to be convicted in the second trial of his public office election law violation case. He questioned if the public would trust Lee if the Supreme Court’s final ruling upholds the conviction, asserting that they would not.
He also predicted that the impeachment trial against President Yoon Suk-yeol would be dismissed and that he would return to office, suggesting that the DPK’s hopes for an early presidential election would be dashed.
Yoon concluded that holding onto Lee is like clinging to a rotten rope and that the DPK must reject him to survive. He expressed uncertainty about whether there is anyone within the DPK with the courage to do so but said that if someone can “bell the cat,” that person could emerge as the next leader of the party.
