President Yoon Suk-yeol will hold a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru on the 15th-16th (local time). This meeting marks their second encounter following their first summit last month on the 10th.

On the 14th, the presidential office stated, “President Yoon will reaffirm his firm commitment to advancing Korea-Japan relations, which will mark their 60th anniversary next year, through his second meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba during the APEC summit.”

While the date for the Korea-Japan summit has not yet been finalized, both countries are coordinating with the aim of holding the meeting on the 16th, according to Japan’s Kyodo News.

After being re-elected as Prime Minister on the 11th, Ishiba stated in a press conference, “If circumstances allow, I plan to visit South America starting from the 14th to have candid discussions with various leaders, including President Yoon Suk-yeol, on international issues.”

Attention is focused on what message Prime Minister Ishiba, known as a ‘dove’ with relatively moderate historical views, will convey regarding Korea-Japan relations.

President Yoon also plans to hold a summit with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss practical ways to enhance cooperation in the security and defense sectors. Bilateral meetings with leaders from Vietnam, Brunei, and other Asia-Pacific regions are also scheduled.

President Yoon intends to condemn the illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, such as North Korea’s deployment to Russia, and seek support from APEC member countries to uphold the rules-based international order.

As the chair country of next year’s APEC summit, President Yoon will also introduce plans for hosting the meeting, which will be held in Gyeongju under the theme “Sustainable Tomorrow We Create Together.”
