Yoon Hee-sook, a former People Power Party lawmaker known as a critic of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, has once again publicly criticized him. In a Facebook post dated the 10th, Yoon challenged Lee to make a promise to the anxious public, citing concerns about his leadership, which she compared to playing a dangerous game of “presidential simulation.”
Yoon argued that the political arena has forgotten the crucial issues at hand, questioning whether returning to pre-martial law conditions would lead to political normalization. She highlighted that the legislative body has been undermined, pointing to examples such as the transfer of counter-espionage powers to the police without proper funding and Lee’s appointment of personal case lawyers to significant positions for protective purposes. Additionally, she mentioned that 24 retaliatory impeachments related to Lee’s investigations have taken place under the current government.
Yoon also criticized Lee’s recent international interview, where he reportedly compared himself to “Korea’s Trump,” arguing this has increased public anxiety over his actions. She urged the People Power Party to focus on their duties rather than calculating political losses, emphasizing that accountability for failing to manage presidential actions should be addressed later.
In her concluding remarks, Yoon called for several measures to restore stability: securing a promise from the opposition for proper parliamentary operations, collaborative decision-making between the president and the opposition, halting impeachment attempts except those related to the president, Lee’s cooperation with legal proceedings and acceptance of outcomes, and the removal of certain committee chairs who have exacerbated parliamentary conflicts.
