Yeo Jin-seong-jun: “The Constitutional Court should decide on Yoon’s dismissal before the 13th… It will save 36.7 billion won in election costs.”

Jin Sung-joon, the policy committee chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated that he hopes the Constitutional Court will deliver its impeachment ruling against President Yoon Seok-yeol by the 13th. In a strategy meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Jin mentioned that if the court reaches a decision to dismiss before the 13th, both the by-elections planned for the 2nd of the following month and the early presidential election expected in May could be held simultaneously, potentially saving 36.7 billion won in election costs, as there are currently 23 regions nationwide scheduled to hold by-elections. Jin also proposed support measures for small business owners to overcome the economic downturn caused by the 12/3 martial law incident. He emphasized the need for tailored compensation for self-employed and small business owners affected by the civil unrest and the closure of Muan Airport, suggesting similar measures to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jin criticized the fiscal support plan revealed by the People Power Party for being insufficient to recover the people’s economy affected by the civil unrest, suggesting that efforts involving cashback for symbiotic consumption, consumption vouchers in eight key areas, and local currency discount support should be seriously considered. He contended that the effectiveness of policies is more important than their distinctiveness and expressed doubt about the economic stimulus potential of the ruling party’s supplementary budget plan. Furthermore, Jin announced plans to create a ‘Special Investigation Committee for Anti-Constitutional Acts’ with four opposition parties to thoroughly investigate extreme right-wing insurrection elements, urging the People Power Party to cooperate in restoring constitutional order instead of inciting fascist rhetoric and actions.
