Rep. Woo Jae-jun of the People Power Party, while announcing his candidacy for the Youth Supreme Council Member election at the 8/22 national convention, addressed far-right Korean history instructor Jeon Han-gil, urging him to “return to the person who cared for his students’ lives.”
During a press conference at the National Assembly today (31st), Rep. Woo shared his connection with Mr. Jeon from attending his classes at a private academy in Daegu in 2005, and made the statement in this context.
Rep. Woo continued, expressing concern that many students were being influenced by Mr. Jeon’s comments defending martial law. He stressed that “the emergency martial law under former President Yoon Seok-youl was undoubtedly wrong, and terms like ‘enlightenment decree’ are incorrect. Denying this means there is no future for our country or our party.”
He added, “I understand the teacher’s heartfelt concern for the country, but I don’t think it is an action that benefits the nation or his students. I hope he would stop now.”
In his announcement, Rep. Woo stated, “I am one of 18 lawmakers who participated in lifting martial law. The Democratic Party cannot hold anyone accountable for martial law, and I am more than capable of fulfilling the role of opposition leader.” He declared his intention to renew the People Power Party to make it a beloved party again.
Rep. Woo is the first incumbent lawmaker to run in the People Power Party’s Supreme Council election.
