Woo Won-sik, the Speaker of the National Assembly, advised that the judiciary, known as the ‘last bastion of justice,’ should resolve the current public distrust by addressing the issues themselves.
Today (24th), Speaker Woo met with Cheon Dae-yeob, the Chief Judge of the Court Administration, at the National Assembly. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on why the public is concerned and distrustful of the judiciary and showing efforts to regain trust.
In response, Chief Judge Cheon highlighted the necessity of ensuring the fairness and political neutrality of trials through the separation of powers and judicial independence. He understood Woo’s remarks as a call for the judiciary to also work towards the proper exercise of citizens’ fundamental rights.
Regarding the ‘judicial reform’ agenda currently under discussion in the National Assembly, Cheon conveyed internal opinions that the judiciary should also participate. He also expressed willingness to provide the necessary judicial administrative support to expedite trials related to treason.
