“Restoration of Democracy and Presentation of Vision on Global Issues, Including the Korean Peninsula”
The South Korean President, Lee Jae-myung, will attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly high-level session taking place in New York, starting on the 23rd of this month, as announced by the Presidential Office today.
In a briefing, Kang Yoo-jung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, explained that the high-level session of the UN General Assembly is the world’s largest multilateral diplomatic stage, with leaders from 193 member states attending. It is held annually for about a week, beginning on the third Tuesday of September.
Kang also stated, “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, and it is expected that international attention will be greater than ever. Through this attendance, President Lee aims to strengthen ties with the international community and conduct various diplomatic activities to elevate Korea’s status as a ‘global responsible power.'”
On September 23, President Lee is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the UN General Assembly, sharing Korea’s democratic development process and presenting the government’s vision and policies on global issues, including those concerning the Korean Peninsula.
Additionally, President Lee will become the first South Korean President to preside over an open debate of the UN Security Council as its chairperson.
Spokesperson Kang mentioned, “South Korea will serve as the chair of the Security Council for the month of September.”
The open debate will focus on topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), international peace, and security, with discussions primarily on the impact of rapid advancements in AI technology on international peace and security.
