The People Power Party repeatedly urged the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and the police to “stop the excessive execution of arrest warrants” as they prepare for the second execution of an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yeol today (10th).
In a floor countermeasures meeting held at the National Assembly today, Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong claimed, “If the National Investigation Headquarters cooperates excessively with the CIHRO in executing arrest warrants under the Democratic Party’s instructions and any person gets injured or if there is an unforeseen incident, the headquarters cannot avoid heavy responsibility.”
He continued, “(The CIHRO should) abandon the illegal second execution of the arrest warrant and transfer the entire case to the police.”
Park Hyung-soo, the senior deputy floor leader, pointed out, “The root of all issues lies in the CIHRO, without investigative capability, pushing forward investigations and arrests out of a desire for prestige. If an agency without investigative rights arrests people with flawed warrants, it will incite extreme political confrontation and divide public opinion.”
The People Power Party also emphasized their concern over police investigation fairness, highlighting a recent statement by Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Sang-sik that he acted as a messenger between the party and the National Investigation Headquarters.
Yoo Sang-bum, a ruling party secretary of the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee, criticized, “The head of the National Investigation Headquarters is under strong suspicion of colluding with the Democratic Party and is identified as an accomplice due to lawmaker Lee’s confession, making it impossible to expect fairness and credibility in the police special unit’s investigation.”
Meanwhile, spokesperson Park Soo-min remarked on the possibility of People Power Party lawmakers regrouping in front of President Yoon’s residence in response to the second execution of the arrest warrant, stating, “Since it is an individual action, it is not easy to foresee.”
Previously, around 40 People Power Party lawmakers gathered in front of the Hannam-dong residence on the 6th to prevent the arrest of President Yoon, arguing that the CIHRO does not have jurisdiction over treason charges and that the arrest warrant issued by the Seoul Western District Court is illegal and invalid.
