The People Power Party stated that they cooperated by voluntarily submitting materials in response to Jo Eun-seok’s special prosecutor’s attempt to conduct a search and seizure of their floor leader’s office, clarifying that there were no materials related to the so-called December 3 martial law vote obstruction suspicions or martial law itself.
Song Eon-seok, the party’s floor leader, mentioned at a policy meeting at the National Assembly today (5th) that although the warrant itself was unjust, they decided to face it confidently by submitting the materials. He said that when they searched the documents with the requested keywords, they found nothing.
He introduced that one of the keywords the special prosecutor requested for the search was “emergency,” saying, “Thousands of documents appeared, and the special prosecutor seemed very pleased. However, when the documents were opened, they turned out to be related to the ‘Emergency Measures Committee’.”
Additionally, he said that the word “impeachment” was included in the search terms, and materials reminiscent of the 31 rounds of impeachment that paralyzed the Yoon Seok-yeol administration poured out, emphasizing that the search and seizure were merely language censorship and political revenge against former floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and the People Power Party, known for criticizing the Democratic Party’s legislative rush.
He urged the special prosecutor to “immediately stop their reckless dance of opposition suppression and political revenge” and declared that they would not forgive nor leave unchallenged the coercive and illegal execution of the search and seizure warrant against party officials without following due process.
People Power Party Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong also criticized in the policy meeting that reckless search and seizures, as if to find something no matter what, continued, noting that the search during which requests for legal assistance from the staff were ignored, clearly violated the basic rights guaranteed under the Constitution and Criminal Procedure Law.
Jeong argued that the indiscriminate forced search appeared to be a move targeting only the opposition party, seemingly when the failure of the personnel verification for the Minister of Education nominee became apparent, indicating a clear political intent for a shift in the political situation.
